Why do I even need rep?
We’ll tell you why! Many high end recipes, designs, patterns and enchants are only available to you once you have achieved a certain reputation level with the faction who offers them.

DONOTCHANGE As I mentioned here, I have bought Brian’s guide to level my paladin from level 70-80 in World of Warcraft’s latest expansion: Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK). In this article, I’ll share my initial thoughts.

I have been using Brian Kopp’s Guide this past weekend and easily reached level 72. I’d estimate it takes a good 6-7 hours per level with my Ret paladin and that’s messing around a bit too, checking out the new instances (The Nexus & Utgarde Keep), respecing protection to solo shattered halls, etc. Turns out my protection gear isn’t as good as my ret gear so I gave up soloing SH after a few times. Brian Kopp’s game mod for the guide makes it extremely simple to use and works with the TomTom waypoint addon and Cartographer map addon so when the guide tells you to go to a waypoint it is automatically entered into those addons. This then displays an arrow telling you which direction to go, how far, and puts a way point on the map. Anyways, each step is displayed for you, map coordinates are automatically put in, NPC names are given. There is no simpler way to level in WotLK!

Update 11-29-2008: My fastest level so far was between 78 and 79. It took me about 4.5 hrs. Not bad! I think my epic flying mount helped quite a bit there.

Update 11-24-2008: After a week using the guide, and not playing 24/7 like some people, I managed to hit level 77! Not too bad.. I do have to say the Grizzly Hills is the biggest pain in the ass zone so far. It is much easier if you could use your flying mount! Level 73-74 took a fast 4.5 hours, I have to say the guide helped me speed through Dragonbait and I got to see the really cool cut scene that ends that zone. Good stuff!

I first got hooked on Brian Kopp’s Alliance Leveling guide when I leveled from 60-70, but back then there was no in-game mod. I had printed the .pdf and checked steps off as I finished them and had to enter in waypoints manually. Kind of a pain now that I’m spoiled by the in-game guide! One more thing, I printed out the guide for WotLK’s Howling Fjord zone but haven’t had a need to look at it since the ingame mod presents the info on the screen.

DONOTCHANGE There are three main suppliers of Warcraft Leveling Guides. Each of them will be updated for the Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK) Expansion. The guides have their strengths and weaknesses and this article will review each of them from a World of Warcraft player’s perspective that has been playing the game since it was released in 2004.

Joanna’s Horde Leveling Guide is one of the oldest guides around. This one focuses mainly on the horde side. Since I’ve played alliance, I don’t have much experience with it. All I can say is people have been very happy with it and the two other guide suppliers used Joanna’s guide ideas for the creation of their guides (formatting, map mods, layout, etc.) Hands down, this is the best horde guide out there.

Brian Kopp’s Guide is a very well written guide that I originally purchased to level 60-70. I followed the guide which I bought the day The Burning Crusade was released. Printed out the .pdf and installed the map mod. The guide proved to be invaluable for leveling my Paladin. Having the printed copy helped me by allowing me to check off the steps that I finished and the map mod clearly shows you where to go. Brian took the time to set waypoints for each of the steps. Needless to say I was one of the first to hit 70 in my guild, it took me about 2 weeks. I then leveled my Mage alt to 39 using the guide, played as a twink for a bit and then used the guide to get to 70. It was a very fast to level my alt, this was before Blizzard buffed the experience rate too. I am very happy with Brian Kopp’s guide and will more than likely use it again when Wrath of the Lich King comes out. There might be a delay between the release of WotLK and when Brian’s guide comes out, but it will be well worth it.

UPDATE (November 12, 2008): Brian Kopp’s Guide has been updated for WotLK so you can now level from 1-80 in that. I just purchased it and will post my results once I get the expansion! I had great success with his alliance guides and highly recommend them.. As I mentioned before, I did 60-70 in 2 weeks (real days) and 39-70 pretty quick too using Brian’s guide.

UPDATE (November 17, 2008): I have been using Brian Kopp’s Guide this past weekend and easily reached level 72. I’d estimate it takes a good 6-7 hours per level with my Ret paladin and that’s messing around a bit too, checking out the new instances, respecing protection to solo shattered halls, etc. Turns out my protection gear isn’t as good as my ret gear so I gave up soloing SH after a few times. Anyways, each step is displayed for you, map coordinates are automatically put in, NPC names are given. There is no simpler way to level!

Team iDemise Leveling Guide - This guide looks very good and also has a map mod. They tout that they have the fastest leveling time out of all the other guides. The price is a little less too. They have guides for both Alliance and Horde so if I was playing both factions, I would get this one! Also, like the other guide suppliers they feature Lifetime membership. You will receive all updates for free and for the rest of your life! New versions of our addon are uploaded frequently and you will receive 70-80 when Wrath of the Lich King is released. This is good because the map addon that Brian Kopp uses had some downtime between patch 2.3 and 3.02. If it weren’t for some bad reviews about having to grind I would sriously consider buying this guide for leveling from 70 to 80.

In conclusion, any of the above three guides will get you to 80 effectively and efficiently. Alot of time has been spent developing those guides and each feature a money back guarantee. So if you are considering purchasing a leveling guide, you won’t go wrong by choosing one of the above.

-Ringmaster / Milenko, Khadgar - Look me up on the armory!

Want to get Gold Capped? Every week, Basil "Euripides" Berntsen takes a short break from building a raiding guild on Drenden (US-A) (we're recruiting!) to write up a guide that will help you make gold. Check out the Call to Auction podcast, and feel free to email Basil any comments, questions or hate mail. Basil is also soliciting questions for an upcoming Gold Capped series, "Ask an auctioneer" via email.

This post is best read while imagining me singing the title to the tune of "Where have all the coyboys gone" by Paula Cole. There -- good luck getting that out of your head!

Auctioneers rely on farmers for raw materials for various businesses. In fact, we rely very heavily on them, and there are quite a few markets that are only more profitable than farming in terms of gold per hour if we can do them on a very large scale ... much more than any one person can farm.

I've been flying circles around Sholazar Basin and boy, are my arms tired!

The interesting thing about the markets we work on is that it's almost no more actual work to make, for example, 150 Titansteel Bars than it is to make 20. The only difference is in how annoying it is to find mats, and the number of Dr. Who episodes you get to watch while AFK crafting. The difficulty of finding lots of cheap mats is really the only barrier we worry about. And any experienced auctioneer will tell you that, historically in Wrath of the Lich King, it's been no trouble at all.

For some reason, the majority of mornings I'd log in to do my buying, I'd see absolutely dumbfounding amounts of raw mats available for ridiculous prices. Cobalt Ore for under 20g a stack, Saronite Ore for as low as 7g a stack, Adder's Tongue for under 5g a stack and Eternal Shadow for as low as 15g a stack.
Want to get Gold Capped? Every week, Basil “Euripides” Berntsen takes a short break from building a raiding guild on Drenden (US-A) (we’re recruiting!) to write up a guide that will help you make gold. Check out the Call to Auction podcast, and feel free to email Basil any comments, questions or hate mail. Basil is also soliciting questions for an upcoming Gold Capped series, “Ask an auctioneer” via email.

This post is best read while imagining me singing the title to the tune of “Where have all the coyboys gone” by Paula Cole. There — good luck getting that out of your head!

Auctioneers rely on farmers for raw materials for various businesses. In fact, we rely very heavily on them, and there are quite a few markets that are only more profitable than farming in terms of gold per hour if we can do them on a very large scale … much more than any one person can farm.

I’ve been flying circles around Sholazar Basin and boy, are my arms tired!

The interesting thing about the markets we work on is that it’s almost no more actual work to make, for example, 150 Titansteel Bars than it is to make 20. The only difference is in how annoying it is to find mats, and the number of Dr. Who episodes you get to watch while AFK crafting. The difficulty of finding lots of cheap mats is really the only barrier we worry about. And any experienced auctioneer will tell you that, historically in Wrath of the Lich King, it’s been no trouble at all.

For some reason, the majority of mornings I’d log in to do my buying, I’d see absolutely dumbfounding amounts of raw mats available for ridiculous prices. Cobalt Ore for under 20g a stack, Saronite Ore for as low as 7g a stack, Adder’s Tongue for under 5g a stack and Eternal Shadow for as low as 15g a stack. I have access to unlimited storage and basically unlimited money, so I did what any opportunist with a basement full of toilet paper would do: I bought every last scrap every single time, reasoning that I’d eventually find time to use it.

Lore nerds, rejoice! Weeks back, Blizzard asked official forum-goers to submit questions for the CDev (Creative Development) team in this thread. Questions have been answered, and there is information-a-plenty. We learn about the ethereals' home planet, pieces of lore about the tol'vir and the oft-reviled Obsidian Destroyer unit from Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne and World of Warcraft, why goblin shaman exist, and the origins of Varok Saurfang, to name just a few awesome reveals.

Here are some highlights:

A: As of the end of the Burning Crusade expansion, blood elves who wield the Light do so through the power of the renewed Sunwell. It is a harmonious relationship, no longer one of discord caused by the blood elves' attempts to bend the Light to their will, which will likely have a positive effect on blood elf society in the long run. Look forward to updates that reflect this change in the Silvermoon and Blood Knight quests.
The Midsummer Fire Festival is pretty decent for a WoW holiday -- good experience and gold from extinguishing and honoring fires, fun cosmetic rewards and occasionally mind-numbing achievements. Wait, what was that last one?

Torch Juggler has become notorious this year, as the achievement is not only difficult for people who are unable to click their mouses and buttons fast enough, but it is also part of the meta-achievement for completing the Midsummer Fire Festival and gaining the title "Flame Keeper." So, here's how to get Torch Juggler in three easy steps.

Get about 15 Juggling Torches. For five Burning Blossoms, the holiday's currency gained through honoring fires, desecrating fires and dailies, you can purchase five Juggling Torches.

Go to Dalaran. A common mistake is that many players attempt this achievement in other capital cities. You need to be in Dalaran!

Download and install the mod Juggler. Juggler is a simple addon that you activate with /juggle or /juggler. The addon replaces your mouse wheel with a series of actions that select a torch and then selects where to throw the torch.

Download Juggler at [Curse].

Activate Juggler, aim your mouse underneath your character and spin your mouse wheel faster than you've ever spun it before. Is this cheesing the achievement? You bet it is. But frankly, the achievement requires dexterity that might not be possible for many people, and factoring in other variables like lag time in Dalaran makes this addon worthwhile. And there you have it. The worst part of the Midsummer Fire Festival is now put to rest, so you can go on having fun.
Midsummer Fire Festival: Need help juggling? originally appeared on WoW.com on Mon, 28 Jun 2010 11:00:00 EST.
The Care and Feeding of Warriors is about warriors, who hurl themselves into the fray, the very teeth of danger armed with nothing more than the biggest weapons and armored with the absolutely heaviest armor we can find. Hey, we're not stupid, we're just crazy.

With patch 3.3.5 upon us and the absolute last raid instance of Wrath of the Lich King set to go live in a week or two, we're finally at the end of the roller coaster of class design for this expansion. Whether you love your class (i.e., play a warrior) or hate it (play one of those other classes like mages -- that one's for you, Dom), it's fair to say that barring any last-minute surprise redesigns, what you see is what you're going to get until Cataclysm.

So where are warriors as a class right now? Since we're a tank/DPS hybrid with two roles and three specs (if you count PvE, anyway; if you include PvP, then we effectively have four roles and three trees to fill them), how well does the class do in each role, and how do our specs shape up? This week we'll discuss protection, the dedicated tanking tree for warriors.

At the beginning of Wrath of the Lich King, warrior tanking saw a pretty significant shake-up in terms of its talents and abilities. Tanking in general was redesigned to be more fun, and a new hero class that was a tank/DPS hybrid was introduced. All of this changed the playing field for warriors pretty significantly. Warrior tanks found that for the first time, protection was possibly the most viable leveling build.

Continue reading The Care and Feeding of Warriors: Wrath report card -- protection

The Care and Feeding of Warriors: Wrath report card -- protection originally appeared on WoW.com on Fri, 25 Jun 2010 19:00:00 EST.

With the final content patch of this expansion on our doorstep and Cataclysm following close behind, we'll be taking the next several weeks to look back on Wrath of the Lich King and everything that made it what it is, for better or for worse, in Wrath Retrospective.

Wrath of the Lich King is coming to an end, and with it one of the largest experiments that Blizzard has ever done in the history of WoW. At the onset of this expansion, we were all introduced to a new class; the death knight. The addition of a new class has major complications on the game as a whole: how they fit into PvE, how they work in PvP, what buffs and debuffs they bring, what roles they fill, what unique utility that they provide. All of these things have changed the face of the game as we know it. though fairly new arrivals, death knights have been integrated into the game almost seamlessly; the craters that they made when they first arrived, however, are still highly visible to those that know where to look.

There were a lot of misconceptions about death knights when they were first released. Once they were announced, Blizzard classified them as being a hero class, not to be confused with your ordinary, run-of-the-mill class. To many people, this caused worry that death knights would be grossly overpowered and far superior to all of the others. Blizzard was quick to point out that this was not the case, but it did little to assuage many of the fears that players had. Still, death knights have had their ups and their downs all throughout this expansion, and if that is not a case for removing then from hero status then I don't know what is.

What can we learn from death knights? What has all of the work done with the significant re-balancing changes and the major talent changes taught us about WoW in general? How can we apply that knowledge to all of the other classes in the game? That is what I wish to explore to day, and I hope that you will join me.
Continue reading Wrath Retrospective: What we learned from death knights

Wrath Retrospective: What we learned from death knights originally appeared on WoW.com on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 09:00:00 EST.
While you're waiting for Patch 3.3.5 to hit the live servers, you can check out Blizzard's latest preview of the final raid instance in Wrath of the Lich King -- the Ruby Sanctum. European Community Manager Wryxian just dropped by the forums to link the Under Development page for Ruby Sanctum, which contains some new images and (perhaps most importantly, for some) the storyline behind the instance.

"Next to nothing is known about who might be responsible for the assault on the Ruby Sanctum: the black dragonflight is not known for forgiveness or patience, but its numbers in Northrend are surely limited. What force would be powerful or daring enough to assail the stronghold of these ancient wyrms? How could such an enemy sneak by the temple's guardians undetected? Surely an approaching air or ground force would have been caught by Wyrmrest Temple's defenders.

For the moment, the members of the accord and their allies must assume the worst scenario that they can conceive of: that all life within the Ruby Sanctum rests on the precipice of extinction, and only immediate intervention will prevent the red dragonflight from being decimated. They'll find that the truth is far worse."

I think some of us know the truth already! If you're raring to go for a trip into the Ruby Sanctum after reading this, prepare yourself by checking out our guide to Halion, the instance's grand poobah.
